The following highlights bills that we have already engaged the General Assembly and are watching for the upcoming session.
SB743- Reproductive health care services; prohibitions on extradition for certain crimes. This bill would prohibit the Governor of the Commonwealth from honoring a demand for extradition of a person who commits an act that is legal in the Commonwealth but is illegal in the state demanding extradition. We feel that it is a very dangerous premise for a state to ignore the sovereignty and laws of another state. The Founding Fathers felt the same when they adopted Article IV Section 2 Clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution, known as the “Extradition Clause.” We also find it very interesting that the only practice that is protected is Abortion rights. The left certainly has an agenda, as the following two bills reveal. Within 6 days of the Democrats Presidential defeat, the democratic led Privilege and Elections Committee pushed through the two bills below for consideration in the House this session.
HJ1- Constitutional Amendment – Fundamental Right to Reproductive Freedom; a constitutional amendment that was expand abortion rights up to and including the time of birth. It would also remove some medical safeguards for women’s healthcare.
HJ9 - Constitutional Amendment – Marriage between two Individuals; a constitutional amendment that would change the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia to allow the marriage of two persons regardless of gender. This will fundamentally change the God ordained order for the family. This bill is the result of the Supreme Court decisions Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) where the court in a 5-4 split party decision misinterpreted the constitution to use the Equal Protection Clause the 14th Amendment to include same sex marriage.
